The 100Year Decision Texas Am and the SEC R Bowen Loftin Rusty Burson 9781457532320 Books Reviews

  • As an Aggie who lived through the sequence, it was fascinating to see what was happening behind the scenes. I also know a couple of the players in the book and I could see the ring of veracity in the stories told and the consistency with the people I knew. All stories have a personal bias, but it was enlightening to read the thought process and adjustments to circumstances as they were occurring for Dr. Loftin and his colleagues.

The story unfolds very well. I have read a lot of Rusty Burson's writing through the years and it was clear that this book was written in Dr. Loftin's voice. This is not just another sports tale ghosted by a sportswriter with the "author's" name appearing on the by-line. This is a very successful collaboration as seen through Dr. Loftin's eyes.
  • This book offered a lot into leadership behaviors and decisions small and large along the path to a huge change for A&M. I am not an Aggie, but I loved learning about the inner workings, patience executed and the trust balance navigated in a huge process like changing athletic conferences. To date, one power school ruled the conference without attempt or care of bringing the other schools into consideration or discussions. The historical background was captivating and the decisions articulated in the book both mitigated many issues and created many other risks.Yet In the end, a century + of constant conference inequalities to A&M, Missouri and other Big 12 schools ended with A&Ms move to SEC. The Big 12 was saved and an accountable commissioner looks to be in place righting some wrongs, including stronger management and guidelines for LHN.
  • Awesome read. Thanks, Dr. Loftin, for confirming some of the b/s that was attempted by our "friends in Austin," as $ Bill liked to call them. Superb, easy read filled with details that are at times jaw-dropping. Finished it in <2 days. We miss you and your bow-tie!
  • As a Texas Aggie, Class of '97, I loved this book. I especially loved hearing all of the behind the scenes day by day, hour by hour changes that were going on at the time Texas A&M decided to move to the SEC. I am sure that for non-Aggies, there would be different perspectives on how this all went down, but I appreciated the candor and respect Dr. Loftin showed in telling this story.
  • Great behind the scenes insight into A&M's move from the Big XII to the SEC. Written by then A&M president Bowen Loftin, so has his bias and perspective. As an Aggie grad and football fan, I loved the read.
  • The back story of how Texas A&M dealt with the issues of the Big 12 and raised their profile substantially by heading to the SEC. It's a short but riveting read and gives clear evidence of why this move was needed and so successful today.
  • Very Good
  • Good overview of the history, behind the scenes negotiations, and politics involved with Texas A&M's interest in and ultimate move to the SEC. It was, however, too obvious which chapters were actually written by the former President and which were written by his sports writer assistant. Discussion about RGIII and other unrelated characters and events added little to the book and detracted from the major story of how A&M wound up in the SEC --- the only reason for reading the book.
